Small Bowel Disease

Small bowel disease has been transformed by video capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy. The session covers capsule endoscopy for obscure GI bleeding, double- and single-balloon enteroscopy for therapeutic interventions, Crohn's disease small-bowel imaging (MR enterography, intestinal ultrasound), celiac disease management and refractory variants with monitoring, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) breath testing and treatment, and small-bowel neuroendocrine and adenocarcinoma management. Discussion addresses lymphangiectasia, eosinophilic enteritis, autoimmune enteropathy, environmental enteropathy in tropical regions, and emerging therapies for refractory celiac disease (larazotide, AMG 714, latiglutenase).
